Dr. Lulu Bravo laments the lack of dengue vaccines in the Philippines, saying that we are still stuck with the 5S strategy — search and destroy breeding sites, seek early consultation, secure self-protection, support fogging initiatives, and sustain hydration.

"We have done a lot for vector control, hindi natin sinsabing walang ginawa ang DOH," she said, noting that the country was able to introduce dengvaxia but its rollout was clouded with controversy. But now, she says: "We have an opportunity to do something... it's about getting together to defeat dengue."

The PMA in their position statement notes that vector control is not enough to curb rising dengue cases:

"Effective prevention and control of dengue require combined vector control and vaccination efforts. Vector control measures, including eliminating mosquito breeding sites and using insecticides, are essential in reducing the mosquito population. However, vaccination is crucial in enhancing herd immunity and reducing severe cases."

The PMA is knocking on the doors of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to consider getting the new generation of vaccines developed for dengue.

"Having witnessed the devastating impact of dengue on our patients and their families, we strongly urge the government to grant access to these new generation dengue vaccines and allow Filipinos the right to protect themselves from this dreadful disease, as enshrined in the Philippine Constitution," their letter to the President read.
